10 Natural Remedies for Headaches

Many people suffer with headaches. Headaches have many different causes. Some of these include stress, sinus problems, allergies, eye strain, hormones, menses, menopause, etc. There are quite a few headache pain relievers on the market, prescription and nonprescription. Some work, some don't. Some have side effects. Following are some home remedies that may help to relieve headaches.

1. First is an acupressure treatment. Apply pressure to the area of skin where your thumb and index finger connect for a minute or two. Apply as much pressure as you can stand. You should notice the headache pain start to slowly lessen as pressure is applied. Repeat as necessary.

2. Another old-fashioned method that truly works is to apply a cold compress over your forehead and eyes. Most drugstores and supermarkets sell cold compresses that you can put in your refrigerator or freezer and use as needed when a headache strikes.

3. Aromatherapy can be an effective means to reduce or eliminate a headache. You can take a bath with peppermint or lavender oils.

4. Herbal teas such as chamomile or peppermint that have a calming effect can help your headache.

5. Have someone massage your muscles. Your neck, scalp and shoulders usually take on much of the stress which in turn may help relieve a tension headache.

6. If the headache is tension related, as soon as you feel it starting, try deep breathing. Take very deep breaths and then exhale slowly. This may stop the stress before it escalates to a higher level.

7. Sounds simple, but sleep usually helps relieve or eliminate headaches.

8. Stay away from foods that are known to provoke headaches. Some most common foods include alcohol, chocolate, MSG, aged cheese, and caffeine.

9. Apply gentle, steady, rotating pressure to the area of your head that is hurting with your index finger and/or thumb. Maintain pressure to the area for approximately 15 seconds, then release and repeat.

10. Feverfew is an herbal remedy that sometimes works on headaches. Feverfew contains substances that work to inhibit the release of mood hormones in the brain. Feverfew is available as tea or in capsule form.

Relaxation is the key to preventing stress headaches. Anything that you can do to calm yourself will be of benefit, whether that means being alone for a few minutes, resting in a dark room, meditating, clearing your mind, etc. The key is to try to do these things as soon as you feel your headache start.
