Home Remedies for Skin Irritation

Skin irritation can have many causes and take many forms, including rashes, itchiness, dryness or sores. Once the cause of the irritation is identified and removed, it may take a day or two for the irritation to completely go away. Several home remedies may help to relieve your skin irritation.

Home Remedies for Skin Irritation

Step 1
Try to identify what is causing a sudden irritation and eliminate it. If you are wearing a non-breathable fabric or your clothing has an itchy tag, simply remove it. If you applied a new lotion or cosmetic, wash it off. Some people are allergic to certain types of jewelry. Is your skin irritated where your necklace, ring or bracelet touches it?

Step 2
Use a cool compress on your irritated skin. Cool water can reduce inflammation and make you feel better.

Step 3
Apply an unscented moisturizer on dry, irritated skin. This can be especially effective after a cool bath or shower.

Step 4
Try not to scratch or rub your irritated skin. If necessary, cover it with a bandage to reduce the chance that you will forget and scratch at the area.

Step 5
Apply a hydrocortisone cream if itching persists. These are available over the counter in any pharmacy, discount store or grocery store. Another option is to take an antihistamine such as Benadryl to reduce inflammation and itching.
